Old Sneed Park Day Trip: Bristol’s Hidden Nature Escape

Hey there! Looking for a quick escape from the city buzz? Or just keen to discover more green spaces around Bristol? You’re in the right place.
I’m a big fan of city life myself, but now that summer is here, I often find myself craving a peaceful green spot to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy a picnic with friends. We all know the classic Bristol nature spots like Leigh Woods, Snuff Mills, and Stoke Park but have you heard of Old Sneed Park?
I visited last Friday and absolutely loved it. It’s a quiet, hidden gem tucked away not far from The Downs, offering a proper escape from the noise and rush of everyday life.

Getting There: The Quick Logistics
Getting to Old Sneed Park is incredibly easy, no matter how you choose to travel:
By Car: Around a 20-minute drive from Bristol city centre.
On Foot: A scenic 20-minute walk from Clifton Downs.
By Train: Hop on the local line and take a short train ride to Sea Mills station.
Accessibility Note: The park is really accessible, with well-maintained paths leading down into the reserve. There are a few uneven patches, but nothing too challenging!
Three Highlights You Can't Miss
1. Wildflowers, Wildlife, and the Lake
The area is full of wildlife and wildflowers - I spotted loads of wild garlic, and you can smell it before you even see it. As you head down, you’re greeted by a beautiful lake with loads of ducks swimming around.
2. The Secret Mansion History
One of the most interesting parts of the park is the site of a former mansion. There are signs dotted around explaining its history and showing exactly where different rooms once stood. I won’t spoil it, you’ll have to explore and discover it yourself.
3. The Wicker Whales at Bennett’s Patch
From the mansion site, we wandered through a tunnel that led us towards Wicker Whales and the open space of Bennett’s Patch and White’s Paddock. It’s such a calm, open area, with a couple of sculptures that make it feel really unique. We ended up sitting beneath the Wicker Whales, relaxing in the shade, listening to birdsong, and just taking in the peaceful surroundings.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?
I’d 100% recommend checking this place out. It’s close enough to the city for a spontaneous trip, but feels like a proper escape from the noise and rush of everyday life.
